Ann Arbor Township Fire Department Information
The Ann Arbor Charter Township Fire Department is a combination fire department comprised of seven full-time personnel, six part-time personnel, and approximately thirty paid-on-call firefighter / EMT’s dedicated to protecting the residents, businesses, and visitors of Ann Arbor Charter Township. Our department proudly provides professional fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical, and prevention services with an unwavering commitment to excellence and community service.
Serving approximately 17.2 square miles and more than 4,300 residents, the department protects a diverse and dynamic community located north and east of the City of Ann Arbor. The Township includes Barton Hills Village, major transportation corridors such as M-14 and US-23, complex interchange systems, residential neighborhoods, educational institutions, commercial developments, parks, and internationally recognized corporate campuses including Domino’s Farms, Domino’s Pizza World Headquarters, Toyota Technical Center, KLA, NSF, NSK, All Seasons Senior Living Community, Washtenaw Community College, and several University of Michigan properties.
Operating from two strategically located fire stations, the department responds to approximately 1,200 emergency, and non-emergency calls annually. Our highly trained personnel provide a comprehensive range of emergency and non-emergency services, including:
- Fire suppression and fire prevention
- Emergency medical first response at the Basic Life Support (BLS) level.
- Vehicle extrication and technical rescue
- Ice, water, and swift-water rescue
- Hazardous materials response
- Fire inspections and code enforcement
- Fire investigation services
- Fire safety and public education
The department maintains a modern and versatile fleet of apparatus and specialized equipment, including two fire engines, one aerial ladder truck, one tanker, two rescue trucks, a squad vehicle, an ATV/brush unit, a technical rescue trailer, a command vehicle, and a utility vehicle. This equipment enables personnel to effectively respond to a wide variety of incidents ranging from residential and commercial fires to vehicle crashes, hazardous materials emergencies, and specialized rescue operations.
The Ann Arbor Charter Township Fire Department places a strong emphasis on training, professionalism, and operational readiness. Department members continuously train in modern firefighting tactics, rescue disciplines, incident command, emergency medical care, and hazardous materials response to ensure the highest level of service to the community.

The Ann Arbor Township Fire Department operates two strategically located fire stations that provide 24-hour emergency response coverage throughout the Township. The department maintains continuous staffing with two career firefighters on duty each day — one assigned to each station — and is further supported by highly trained paid-on-call firefighter / EMT’s who respond to incidents across the community.
Fire Station 1
Fire Station 1 is located at the Ann Arbor Township Hall and Administrative Offices, 3792 Pontiac Trail, Ann Arbor, MI 48105. The station is staffed around the clock — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year — by a career firefighter. While Station 1 responds to all calls for service within the Township, its primary response area includes all Township properties located west of Nixon Road.
Fire Station 2
Fire Station 2 serves as the department’s headquarters and houses the Fire Department’s administrative offices. The station is located at 4319 Goss Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48105. Like Station 1, it is staffed continuously by a career firefighter 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Station 2 responds to all emergency calls and service requests throughout the Township, with its primary response area covering all Township properties located east of Nixon Road.
In addition to the career staffing at both stations, the department’s paid-on-call firefighter / EMT’s are dispatched to all emergency incidents and service calls within Ann Arbor Township, providing additional personnel, apparatus staffing, and operational support.
ISO Public Protection Classification (PPC)
The Ann Arbor Township Fire Department currently holds a split ISO Public Protection Classification (PPC) rating of 5/10, effective September 1, 2023.
What Does a Split Classification of 5/10 Mean?
Ann Arbor Township’s ISO rating is a split classification, meaning the rating depends on a property’s location in relation to a fire station and water supply.
Class 5 Areas
Properties generally receive a Class 5 rating when they are:
- Within 5 road miles of a recognized fire station, and
- Within 1,000 feet of a recognized water supply, such as a fire hydrant.
Class 10 Areas
Properties generally receive a Class 10 rating when they are:
- Located more than 5 road miles from a recognized fire station.
What Does a Class 5 Rating Mean?
ISO ratings range from Class 1 to Class 10:
- Class 1 represents exemplary fire protection.
- Class 10 represents the lowest classification.
A Class 5 rating indicates that Ann Arbor Township provides a solid and effective level of fire protection through:
- Emergency communications and dispatch services
- Fire department staffing, training, and equipment
- Water supply and hydrant systems
- Community risk reduction efforts
How Does Class 5 Compare Nationally?
According to ISO national distribution data, Class 5 is the most common PPC rating in the United States, meaning Ann Arbor Township’s fire protection is comparable to many well-protected communities nationwide.

Fire Department Training and Personnel Development

The department proudly conducts its own in-house Fire Academy, providing recruit firefighters with comprehensive training in fire suppression, rescue operations, hazardous materials response, firefighter safety, and emergency scene operations. The academy combines classroom instruction, practical skills training, and live-fire evolutions to prepare personnel for successful careers in the fire service.
The department maintains a comprehensive driver training program focused on the safe and effective operation of emergency apparatus and department vehicles. Personnel receive training in emergency vehicle operations, apparatus positioning, pump operations, aerial operations, and defensive driving techniques to ensure safe response and operational readiness.
